In today’s world, eBook and print-on-demand sales have become extremely important. Both these formats boost an author’s sales and allow for global reach. As a self-published author, you may not always have the funds to print and ship books overseas. Online retailers like Amazon and IngramSpark allow you to reach local and international audiences without these costs. This article will show you how to set up a Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) account with Amazon.
The KDP platform allows you to upload an eBook and print-on-demand version of your book and manage the sales and marketing yourself.
The process is outlined below. For a more detailed breakdown of the process, you can go to Amazon’s website and follow the instructions. There are also videos available.
The process
- Go to com and sign up for a free account (if you do not already have one).
- Go to the Kindle Direct Publishing website and log in with your Amazon details.
- Once logged into KDP, you will be asked to complete your author profile. Information you will need to provide includes name, email address, author name, and your South African tax details.
- Thereafter, you will need to set up your payment information. Please read through the different payment options carefully to see which would work better for you.
- Read through how you are paid (eBook and POD royalty structures) through the platform, as there is a minimum threshold before payments are made. It is important to understand how the royalties work, as it will help you understand your sales reports from the platform.
- Complete your tax interview.
- Once you have completed the account setup, you can go ahead and upload your book to the platform.
Those are the steps in a nutshell. If you are doing this all yourself, then we advise reading through the guides available on the Amazon website or going onto YouTube as there are many videos on the subject of Amazon and KDP.
